There are different layers inside some of the "spheres". The stratosphere contains our weather. Air does cool as it rises. Once you leave the stratosphere and head upwards temperatures are going to vary. In the thermosphere it is very hot, however, a thermometer will measure zero degrees celcius due to the fact the temperature is the average movement of molecules in a substance. Since the molecules are spread far apart and are not colliding with each other the thermometer will not give a true reading.

In the "spheres" there are different temperatures set in the Earth's atmosphere. The troposphere or the weather sphere had a higher temperature than of the stratosphere. But the mesosphere is the coldest because its prefix "meso-" means "cold". Thermosphere is the hottest because the prefix "thermo" means "heat" or "hot."
