Almost all African countries are safe to visit . The degree of Your safety is also depends on the purpose of visit . For example if I am a tourist to Zimbabwe I will miss most of the trouble because their tourist resorts are still the safest places to go . Avoid the Cities . Same as South Africa /Kenya avoid Nairobi and Johannesburg . If you are on a political mission avoid North and Eastern Africa .
The worst countries to visit in Africa besides the above factors are
Sudan (Civil War)
Democratic Republic of Congo ( Civil war)
Uganda [Foreign nationals often abducted by rebels Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) ]
Somalia ( civil unrest,no government no one to protect you - warring parties)
Central Africa Republic (civil unrest spilling from Sudan)
Sierra Leone ( civil unrest)
Liberia ( civil unrest)
Advice :general safety rules you will apply in the States still need to be considered when you are travelling .
Have a safe trip .

Almost all of them. However what is your definition of safe?
Some people wouldn't go to Detroit or Washington, DC because
they are looked at as being unsafe and I've lived in both.
I would say I would avoid Sudan, Congo, and Somalia because of the issues they are having. Ive visited a few countries in Africa-however I went with tour groups/and when we did go out w/ the group we didn't go by ourselves but in groups of 3 or 4.
As a recommended country South Africa, Egypt, Senegal, Tanzania, and Kenya!!

Having lived and traveled to Africa I can tell you Nigeria is DEFINATLY not safe. You have to bribe your way into the country. Egypt,S.Africa, Kenya and most north African countries except Sudan are safe. The others i warn you to be wary about and to check the state departments list of countries and reasons not to go to.

I guess it depends on your definition of 'safe' and what your travel plans and purpose for visiting would be.
One person mentioned not going to Sierra Leone because of civil unrest--I recently returned from living there for nearly 2 years and felt completely safe there. There are some areas that you may want to avoid, but Sierra Leone, for instance, has some of the most beautiful scenery and untouched beaches I've ever seen. I hope we can get back there at some point!

I would say mostly Nigeria,Egypt and South Africa.
and Ghana yup.
However if the people are kind to you, you will have to watch out for wild animals as well, like lions and pythons.
