My favorite is Rooster Cogburn in True Grit and the sequel Rooster Cogburn. I also like Rock Torrey in In Harm's Way.

Flutters I had never seen They Were Expendable until a couple of months ago and I agree The Duke turned in a great performance. Additionally it told a great story about WWII of which I was not fully aware.

Rooster is one of my all-time fav characters. I liked him in The Shootist too. I have way think he knew he was dying in real life and put that into the role. Pretty powerful acting as a result.

This is a very hard question for me to answer because there are so many. But I guess I will go with Jacob McCandles in Big Jake. Also George Washington McLintock in Mc Lintock. He was great in both of these.
He was such a wonderful actor; there wasn't ONE best performance, there were HUNDREDS!!

i'm advantageous there are others, yet those are nicely worth seeing: real Grit, The Searchers, the guy Who Shot Liberty Valance, McClintock!, Babyface, Flying Tigers, El Dorado, chicken Cogburn, and The Shootist.

In my opinion it would be the Quite Man. The film took place in and was filmed in Ireland. It was almost unheard of from studios to allow filming to take place outside of the US. John Huston directed the movie. Classic lines , beautiful scenery, and it is a romantic comedy.

I've never seen a "best" performance.....I think J.W.'s "talent" was a lot of hype.
