1) Increase RAM (memory).
2) Increase free disk space (remove unneeded programs from hard drive, delete temp files and folders, switch to a larger hard drive, add a second hard drive)
3) Reduce the number of programs running in your system tray/at startup. You can do this by going to Start > Run > type "msconfig" > go to the StartUp tab and deselect everything except critical programs like your anti-virus.
4) Scan for/remove spyware/adware/malware.

Check out Advanced Windows Care, it will help with most of this automatically and it's free: http://www.iobit.com/

That is your virtual memory. What your going to want to do is right click on my computer, and go down to properties. Then click on the advanced tab, and look for: Visual Effects, processor scheduling... click the settings button. Click the advanced tab again. Down at the bottom you should see a box named Virtual Memory. Click the change button. On the window that pops up select custom size. The maximum size should one and a half times the amount of RAM you have. If it isn't change it to that number and ok out of everything. Then restart your computer.

If you don't know how much RAM you have click start-click run-type in dxdiag, on the window that appears click ok. The next window should tell you the amout of RAM you have, then follow the steps above.

Although most people will tell you to get more RAM, most of the time it's not necessary, and often no one wants to spend that much money on computer equipment. The above technique will use your hard drive like it's a stick of RAM. It will enable you to do alot more then what your able to do now.
