I am an older lady (late 50s)I have had health problems and loads of surgery( bowel and gull bladder included)I am becoming a little afraid to go to bed at night, as i fear that I may not be able to get my breath back when this happens. or maybe not wake and choke in my sleep.as i have had so many surgeries I am frightend to see the Doctor about this and have started to keep myself awake all night with the aid of cafine.I also have a little bit of pain under my left rib cage.does anyone know what this may be ?

I am hoping someone who has had same or simalar, may be able to tell me what it was that caused it. then I can decided what I should do.

You are putting an upward pressure and it goes up the Esophagus. Also, laying on the Right side can cause this and the Left not as bad as the stomach is placed more below the Esophagus. Try not eating and drinking as much about 2 hours before you go to bed. Then maybe drink a cup of water 30 minutes before, if you feel thirsty. This may help, but, it depends on the individual.
If, it continues, I feel you may need to see a Doctor.

Asking to be diagnosed by non-medical personnel over the internet is just simply ridiculous. Only trained medical personnel can tell you what's wrong. There is no point in keeping yourself awake because all you're doing is preventing symptoms, you aren't addressing the cause. For all you know, the caffeine is just making it worse. Go to the doctor.

a trip to the doctor. if bile is coming up into your mouth choking you somethings not right. get over your fear and go see a doctor. the only other option is to keep choking on your bile. it will only get worse with your procrastination.
