I want an SLI gaming system with an am2 socket processor..... I narrowed it down to two processors. The AMD 64 X2 5000+ and the Conroe (Intel Core 2 Duo) witch one does everybody think is better? BTW: Why is the AMD 64 a 32 bit processor that's ready for 64 bit applications? I always thought it was just a 64 bit processor....... Thanks!

Intel is back on top with introduction of Intel Core 2 Duo !
but depend on how much money you want to spend?
Fast and Pricy : Intel Core 2 Duo,
Budget: AMD 64 X2 5000+ Socket AM2
Bargain: AMD 64 X2 4800+ Socket 939.

Even though DDR is being replaced by DDR2. There is little performance gain on current generation of Socket AM2 AMD processors have over Socket 939. (not an option for intel based system as intel had not used DDR memory for some time). You can save a lot of money on CPU, Motherboard and Memories for about the same performance. granted you won't be able to reuse these compents later on.

Okay first lets disregard the first and third answer as they apparantly are out of touch with the latest benchmarks, which I will provide. Now to the middle guy, he was nice enough to categorize, but I will go ahead and give you the exact prices from newegg. (I will use the E6600 Core 2 Duo as it is the most popular of them)

Fast and Pricy : Intel Core 2 Duo: $315
Budget: AMD 64 X2 5000+ Socket AM2: $329
Bargain: AMD 64 X2 4800+ Socket 939. $232

Funny that the "pricy" one is less than the "budget" one isn't it. And if you take a look at the benchmarks it is clear which of the three is fastest. The Core 2 Duo uses the LGA 775 socket, so you would need that type of motherboard of course.

As for the 64 bit, I really don't know about the ready or whatever, all I know is both the AMD 64 and Core 2 Duos can do 32 bit or 64 bit, so its irrelevant in your choice.

the amd chip is wonderful, as it is also duel core and cheaper than intel duelcore, but they still smoke the intel!
