You can't boot to an external. Your mostlikely going to have to format and reinstall everything. I you have the resources of another hard drive that is not being used, install the OS on to that and hook up the bad drive as a slave. Copy all the files over to a known working drive (If you ahve an external) then once your sure you ave everything format and reinstall.

You have corrupted software, hopefully not caused by bad sectors on the drive. Start the system in safe mode (F8 at start-up). If it opens the do start-run and put chkdsk /f in the box and hit enter. You will get a message that it cannot run now and do you want it to run at the next start. Say yes and reboot. This will fix some corruption and cross-linked files. It may be all you need. If that does not work the reload windows right over your present load. You will have to reload all of your programs as well but you will not lose any data, assuming that you do have a lot of free space on the drive.

Losing data on a hard drive is the worst nightmare of any computer owner. However, some hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful
