Ferrets come from the petstore already with the scent gland removed and spayed/neutered. (if you're unsure ask) But they still emitt a scent that most find unpleasant, but they have a special supplement that you add to their water for that. I have three, and yes they do need a large cage (there are three of them, so of course!) Ferrets are like good chocolate, you can't stop at just one bite! Anyway, mine came potty trained, so I only have to go through a refresher course every now and again. They need to be kept in a high traffic room of the house, I keep mine in the TV room, they love cartoon network. Now you shouldn't keep them caged up all the time, it can get quite boring. They need a flow of something new to play with, I change their toys out when I clean their cage (once a day) and I keep like five different sets so that they aren't that bored with what they have. They also need to get out of the cage and run around the house (or a special ferret proofed room) for 1 to 4 hours a day, and be careful when you let them loose, as if they can get their noses in a hole past their eyes, they CAN squeeze into it. That said, DO NOT give your ferret the little cardboard tube that's left when the toilet paper is gone, I've made that mistake before and had to cut the poor ferret out. Anyway, they're always doing something hilarious, or silly, or hilariously silly, and they are loads of fun.

They're a lot of trouble if your gf doesn't take care of it like she promised!

It was like $100 or so for the long rat and the cage was like $150 like nine years ago. I dunno maybe 175 for both. Way more than it was worth.
Yeah - fairly big cage. And then there's the ferret hammock you got to get, the leash, the shiirts so they don't get cold.

Can you potty train them?? How about that!

Get a hamster or gerbil if you want a small animal.
Get a dog or cat if you want a pet.

Actually, I have a friend that has a pet rat (in addition to cats and dogs), and a couple of ferrets. I've never seen the ferrets out of their cages, but the rat's sat on my should and, is actually quite cute.
She worked at a animal shelter for years, so I'm sure she knows how to take care of ferrets, but I've never seen them out much and after my first experience didn't plead for thier release.

I have had 3 so far - they are basically like a mix between a cat a dog and a 3 year old.
They get into EVERYTHING, need expensive food and care, a huge cage to be properly housed. The vaccines are more expensive than a dog or cats, and they are very prone to illnesses and can die very quickly. They have tiny little intestines so it is dangerous if they swallow anything. They can get the FLU from you and give it to you.

I would say they are nice to own, and not too high maintenace, but they are EXPENSIVE!!! If you have the means - they are great pets. If you cant afford to spend lotsa cash - forget it - get a pet rat!

Ferrets are the greatest, but you should think of them as children, they need alot of time , love, patience, understanding, care, feeding, cleaning & playtime. Also, for your ferret to be the happiest that it can be...it needs another ferret as a playmate. They also have different personalities, so watch out. We lokked at about 10 before we picked our girl, and 13 before our girl picked out a boy. You need to "ferret proof" your home. And get a two to three story cage for them. Mine are out all the time except at night when we go to bed.

I had one and ended up not having enough time to play with him and felt guilty about having to leave him in his cage a lot of the time. They are very easy to potty train...tending to pick a favorite corner in their cage, or if you let them run around the house, a favorite corner there. You just put a litter box down and they use it...I had mine in a fairly large cage and they're very curious so you should have a lot of toys to keep it interested when you can't be there to play with it...Toes are a favorite toy, I've found out. Haha.

They stink. Get their stink gland removed! lol You need a good sized cage, 3-4 feet wide to the same size tall. They tend to use a litter box just like cats, don't need much training, but keep it clean. They are a lot of fun, they play games and stuff. They can be escape artists, so make sure ur cage closes well. They like tunnels and blankets to run through and bury themselves in.

some human beings do exactly no longer think of of animals and pets as living creatures yet products and comodities like a flower basket or padded toliet seat. i might grant to purchase the ferret from her is you are able to have the money for it. yet while no longer with any luck it gets a solid homestead with the subsequent man or woman who buys it.

they are very fun! don't need much room, if you let them out every day! bath once a week(keep down odor). they usually us a litter box like a cat! the only two bad things i can think of is they love milk! keep bottles away from them, they will steal them! the like shinny thing and will steal them too!! keep keys & things out of reach!
