Ever heard of Black Horse and the Cherry Tree by KT Tunstall? I'm really confused because the lyrics make no logic so I'm guessing that there's some "hidden meaning" that I'm not getting. Please answer and thank you.

she talks about being "sent to a place in the middle of nowhere" the big black horse is an obvious metaphor for a man, who says he wants to marry her. She doesnt want to. second verse says "i cut some corners and i shouldnt have done that and they wont forgive me after all these years" so I'm thinking the "they" that wouldnt forgive her might have been her parents. So my guess is the big black horse is the guy her parents would like to see her with... but she's uninterested in him or his cherry tree (which is probably a metaphor too, but for what I'm not sure). Mind you I could be way off here, but thats what i get from it

It possibly could mean that the black horse is missing the knight in shining armor(since knights had black horses so they can be concealed in the darkness). Since the horse is missing the knight in shinning armor, the "person" is not right for the girl, aka the cherry tree. Cherries are sweet, so are girls. It is a song with alot of metaphors, and it's understandable to be confused, I was too when i first heard it, but once I stepped back and looked at the big picture, I understood it.

Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" is inspired by old blues, Nashville psycho hillbillies & hazy memories. It tells the story of finding yourself lost on your path, and a choice has to be made. It's about gambling, fate, listening to your heart, and having the strength to fight the darkness that's always willing to carry you off.

I'm assuming that the black horse is a metaphor for a "bad boy" archetype who tries to get her to change her life path. The line about her "hard-headed brother" not forgiving her makes me think that the song is also about straying from the ideals of the family in order to carve a life for yourself, and then just wanting to get back home. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, though...

my opinion is strong on this one only cuz I myself was curious to what it meant as well. I interpret it as the black horse as the man who wanted to marry her and keep her back, the cherry tree- which holds her heart is herself and her life..
this is completely my opinion

Sometimes songs don't have to make sense they can just be good, fun songs. I love that song & the artist, its such a cheerful song I can't help but sing it when I read it.
