And definitely no venom. I am doing research in trying to find probably an impossible solution, but here are some thoughts.
1) Middle East seems to be still ruled according to tribal standards, which are hard for westerners to follow or comprehend.
2) The region has lot of wealth, but people are poor, specially in the neighboring Africa, which may well be the next hotbed of revolt
3) Western governments tend to be short-lived (3 to 4 years), whereas rulers in the middle east are often for life
4) There is a lot of hate between muslims and non-muslims, and between muslims themselves
5) Westerners cannot stoop to terrorists' level of debauchery and callousness. They must treat everyone as innocent until law can prove them guilty.
6) The only world body -UN-that can help seems to be inept and corrupt.

So what to do? I believe except for a minority of troublemakers, muslims by and large want to live in peace, and be left alone to pursue their faith and their livelihood

your premises have flaws.

I was going to write a kind of long explanation but realized that it would be unread. You should just start checking if what you are assuming is true. Include Russia as a western state and the mostly Muslim states it is at war with as Middle Eastern.
Statement 5 is worth special mention, you should check out some of the alternative news links this is a very honest on of the area 24 years ago http://www.inminds.co.uk/from-beirut-to-jerusalem.html . the more recent ones are more graphic. So long as you insist on a totally black and white picture you will never be able to see the full scene in the region. We have already stooped far below the debauchery of the terrorists but that must never be admitted because then what we do in the hunger for oil might not be "right" or "just".
What to do, that is the multi trillion dollar question. I guess we will just have to kill everybody. Is it the average Muslims fault that he lives on top of such wealth, starving, while we send people to shoot him. Is it wrong for them to want to fight back? Does it in the end really matter about them? The Oil Wars are going to last for a while yet. The Oil Wars have been being fought in the area for at least 80 years now. Maybe when the Oil is gone the survivors can be left alone.

I agree that the UN is inept and corrupt. What we have is the classic "us against them" mode of thought. If you are not like us then you must be the enemy. That way of thinking is gradually changing in the west and is now more centered on sports teams rather than race or religion even though many problems still exist. the change is due to moderate thinking and our way of life where we believe "innocent until proven guilty". what we need is to have moderate islamists speak out more - especially against the vile hatred spewing forth from many of the current leaders. I also think that we need to better address the hatred from the muhlahs in western countries as well - yes we have freedom of speech, but that freedom should not include inciting riots and exhorting others to kill the infidels. Maybe if we begin prosecuting the hate-mongers for inciting riots it will begin to ease.
