I've had several pap tests where my gyno tested for STDs and it came back negative. Does this mean I don't have HIV or is there another test to take?

HIV is tested by a blood test. You need to wait 3 months after any 'encounter' which you feel may have put you at risk.

The test results can take under a day, to over a week depending on the local testing facilities where you are.

A GUM clinic can do the test confidentially, so it never needs to be on your medical notes that you have been tested.

A pap test does not test for HIV, so you would need to take another test... usually a blood test. You will probably have to specifically ask your doctor for it, since it's not always part of routine screening.

You need to get a different test, a blood test, a pap won´t tell you anything about HIV.

HIV testing is separate from other tests such as pap tests and std tests so you should get tested if you have possibly been exposed. You can go to the Dept of Health and be tested free of charge and anonymously if you like.

AFAIK they need to ask your specific permission before they test for HIV so it is unlikely this was included in the range of tests they ran. If you're wanting a thorough check then yes, I'd say you need to get an HIV test done.

The HIV test requires a Pap smear, but I think you have to ask specifically for it. One or two smears can't be tested for everything.
