David Koresh had a buddy with a Class III firearms license, which meant he could own and assemble fully automatic weapons. He said "man, we could make some money assembling ChiCom AK 47's if I just had a place to store the parts". David said "I have a vault up at Mt. Carmel." and the deal was on. Everything was fine until the ATF audited the friend's business and said "where's the rest of it?" and he said "over at Mt. Carmel."

ATF panicked, but they'd been looking for a reason to justify the military training they were asking for, so they mounted a siege of the compound. David said "What's with the firepower, you can come in and look" but they said "no, you come out with your hands up" and about that time the FBI realized that the ATF had gone off the deep end and took over, but the problem by then was that the news was all over the place and they couldn't figure out how to back down without looking like putzes, so they asked for and received permission to forcibly enter the building.

They then used tear gas, which can be deadly to the elderly and small children, and is flammable in the first place, and then a spark blew up the whole place.

To justify the massacre, Janet Reno first claimed that they were investigating allegations of child abuse, but this wasn't mentioned again because someone apparently clued her in that child abuse isn't a federal issue and wouldn't be in the ATF's purview if it was, so they sorta glossed over explaining why the federal agents were even there in the first place and went on with trying the survivors for resisting arrest and shooting at federal agents.

At the trial of the survivors, no one ever produced a warrant.

Wikipedia has some good info.

My take:

1993. Wacko Koresh convinced impressionable people to join cult. Said cult based at a compound in Waco, TX. ATF believed he had many firearms and was planning something. ATF and other law enforcements officers (including FBI siege) overestimated Koresh as a threat and pretty much destroyed the whole place killing everyone there.

Still an interesting piece of history.

I watched in on the news when it happened, one of them set the place on fire when the Feds showed up. David Koresh was the Cult leader. If you google his name, it will all come up.
