Why would you recommend against extensive development and urbanization of the recharge area of an aquifer that serves your community?

Exactly right.

Impervious surfaces like roofs and parking lots will significantly reduce groundwater recharge. Your community will have less water to withdraw increasing chances of running out.

More importantly, anything placed on or in the ground will end up in your drinking water. Lawn chemicals, oil from cars, e-coli from septic systems, etc eventually poisoning your groundwater. Mother nature can only filter out so much, and some nasty things will not filter out.

Allowing development in a groundwater recharge area will slowly poison the community it serves.

Pavement and roofs, water infiltration would be reduced as pollution of what soaked into the ground increased.
