Go Ask Alice is almost certainly NOT nonfiction.

And the unknown author is one Beatrice Sparks. But that's another story in itself--about how to make a best seller out of a fairly ordinary book and pocket the royalties for so-called "anonymous diaries." See the sites listed below for all the details. Here's one summary statement:

"Go Ask Alice was the product of Beatrice Sparks, an author who has come out with a number of 'teens who saw their lives ruined by their bad choices' offerings, each one presented as a true story, often in the form of a diary of an anonymous teen."

The other novels deal with teenage pregnancy, satan worship, gang violence, eating disorders, and the like, and have titles like It Happened to Nancy, Annie's Baby, Jay's Journal, etc. All, including Alice, are listed by the US Copyright office under Sparks' name.

One family provided the diaries of their son, a young suicide to Sparks, asking her to prepare them for pubication. They were horrified at the result. In the novel, Jay's Journal, only about 20 of the 212 "diary entries" are said to have been based on the original. The young man's brother, Scott Barrett has published a refutation, A Place in the Sun.

Sparks, if she is still living, is 88 years old.

The title, Go Ask Alice, by the way, refers to a minor character in the book and is taken from the Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit," which in turn alludes to Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.
