my bank transfered 500USD instead of 500GBP to an account i have in China from my UK GBP account. I asked them to call back the dollars and resend in pounds or face the wrath of the financial ombusman which they did. .. however some months later the dollars are still in my dollar account at the bank of china. how long before the dollars become mine legally?

Think way back to when you opened your checking account, keep thinking, ok, do you remember. Well you signed an agreement with the bank at that time (you may no longer have a copy of it, but I bet the bank has a copy). Well in that agreement there is a small (I mean tiny, tiny) disclaimer that loosely states that the bank can do what ever they want, when ever they want.
My suggestion to you is to notify the bank and let them do the research and make decisions.
On another note, if there is money in your account that was wired in and you were un aware of it, you need to have the wire sent back, you could be the next high risk country scam. I have seen people taken and even physically hurt by this method of wire scam.
I have even called the police and had scam victims interrogated by the police (the sad part is the victim did not even know they were a victim).
