That woman is crazy. What is this world coming to when you can't compliment a baby anymore. People used to like when you said their kid was cute.

Man.... what is this world coming to?
I knew they would take this crap way too far; when my kids were little, they started telling them not to speak to strangers, and I thought, "wait a minute... not all strangers are threatening."
She had the baby in her arms! What did she think somebody was going to do? It's sad, that child is going to grow up being afraid of everybody.
I'm glad the cop didn't make any more of it.
You probably shouldn't have hollered at the woman, even though she was being so rude. That was where you kind of messed up, so I can see why the cop asked you to leave.
It's very sad, the way the world has turned, but really not all mothers are that way. I was in a waiting room at a doctor's office, a couple days ago, and a young woman sat down right across from me. Her baby was staring at me as I read my book, so I asked her if the baby was 5 months old (that's when they usually start staring at strangers). She said yes, and the baby and I exchanged some smiles and that was about it. She didn't seem to think it was any threat. There are still lots of nice people out there. Maybe WalMart isn't the best place to meet them. LOL.

Wow .. it's not like you were trying to kidnap the child or anything. after all... the mother was right there. It's just a shame that we have come to this with all the horrible things that happen in our society. I personally would do the same thing when a child looks me in the eye... it's hard to resist saying hello to a sweet child.
Parents who react in such a defensive manner are actually being "offensive" but I guess in a way I can't blame them for being wary of strangers in public. It's just the rudeness that bothers me. It's a shame we can't be nice without being suspect
I guess today we (men and women) can no longer acknowledge each other, and must suppress our desire to be neighborly or someone will think we have ulterior motives.

I'm afraid your reaction caused it to be blown out of proportion. Media causes every mother to think that every single male is a peado first and a friendly person second (which is not wrong) but this does cause problems. Working with kids i get this a lot but i respect that, doesn't make it easy but at least parents are being aware to keep an eye on their children. The best thing to do next time is just to smile and wave back, and carry on walking.

It's the responsibility of a parent to guard their children against the evils of the world. The only way you can teach a child is to expose them to life. The child needs to realize that just because someone says "hello" isn't an invitation to go off with them. Regardless of how you were dressed or what you look like is a perfect way to explain a "nice stranger" to a child. "Yes, he's seems like a nice man, but he is still a stranger". Calling the police is highly inappropriate. I hope you weren't embarrassed and don't feel that all mothers are this crazy.

Wow. That lady obviously has issues. You probably shouldn't have snapped back at her, but I can't really blame you. I am assuming that the other women did not really know what was going on. People tend to side with the mother with a cute baby, rather than some guy they don't know.

Wow. I'm not sure what to think. Obviously you were in a public place, so I don't think she should have felt threatened. Some people are very protective of their children, but that doesn't give them the right to act that way to anyone.

People are trying to train their children not to talk to strangers. Best just to smile back at the child and not say anything because people are getting very protective.

Sounds like the mother is a psycho... but these days with all the freaks out there it's hard not to be concerned, but it sounds like a major overreaction on the mother's part...
