It gives kids the signal that success equals money. Thats not the type of message I wish to send my kids.

It's a great way to reward your kids, instead of always giving out money, you should think about letting them stay up an hour extra, or buy them ice cream. Kids will do anything for rewards, if you have to give them something why not?? I mean their getting good grades, so really it benefits you both. Wait til they get older, they'll start getting good grades because they want to, also because they want to get into a great college. It's like training a puppy, you give them puppy treats when they pee outside or do a trick. Kids have the same mentality, if they don't receive a reward then why should they bother doing the goods?

I dont think so, because children should learn first how to earn and work hard for money. In this case, if their motivation to learn and achieve good grades is money, then parents are giving them the wrong notion of how money can be earned and that might not be enough sooner or later. A good motivational factor for children to achieve good grades is, for example: a better travel deal or vacation WITH THE PARENTS. Money should not be the only thing that parents can offer for their kids. Time, effort, attention...these things are priceless...

As with most parenting questions the answer depends on the kids. Parenting is more of an art than a science. I am blessed with a couple of kids who want to get good grades simply because they want good grades. Of course, when they get a good report card there is usually some sort of perk like a trip to Amy's Ice Cream in it for them. However, that is not their main motivator.

OTOH, I'm not adverse to bribery it that's what it takes to motivate. As I said above, it all depends on what the kids respond to.

No. It's not right to reward people for doing something they should be doing. Do you deserve money for driving the speed limit or not raping the girl next door? Of course not. A good grade is reward in itself. Now stop thinking about the girl next door. That is bad.

I give my daughter $20 for straight As (she's in 3rd grade). It makes her try harder in school, so in that way it is good. In my opinion, kids shouldn't have to be bribed, but it is nice to reward their hard work.

Is a good thing because they would want to get a good grade. ANd it will help them look at it like a real job where you do your work and you get paid for it.

I give my kids money when they get good grades. It gives them something to look forward to when they have tried hard all semester! However, it is bad when parnent give their kids money for not doing well.

yes- because it gives them insentive and pushes them to do better
but for the same reason no- it may push them too hard to do better and cause stress and headaches and if there is 2 kids and one does better the other one feels down (i know im not as intelligent as my older brother)
