It's called denial. I attended some therapy sessions many years ago to try to get help for my adulterous husband (it didn't help him). However, during those sessions, we had some talks about how we perceive ourselves. There are things we see in ourselves, things that only other people see in us, and a few things that neither we nor anyone else can see. We're very complex entities, and sometimes reality is just too painful for us to look at, so we put our heads under the covers, assume the fetal position and ignore the real world. Too, oftentimes, people validate themselves by helping others rather than realizing that you HAVE to start with YOU! It's a hard thing to do, but absolutely necessary. Some people never do realize that the only person you can change is YOU!!
