Say your cycle is 28 days long.. You would normally ovulate on day 14 which is 2 weeks after your period. If your cycle was 26 days long then you would ovulate on day 12.. etc.
But some women are irregular so ovulation cant really be predicted with those cycles. And then some women can ovulate ON their period.
But if your cycle is normal than you should be able to count the days. Good luck!

I always was under the assumption,the egg came first,and if not fertilize,then it was wash away by your period.
