It can be either, just depends on the situation. If it is something as important as politics you need to be more realistic than idealistic. But it is definitely good to think about how things should be. Take it as a complement.

Being An Idealist

Well just to give you a quick definition...
i·de·al·ist

NOUN:

1. One whose conduct is influenced by ideals that often conflict with practical considerations.
2. One who is unrealistic and impractical; a visionary.
3. An artist or writer whose work is imbued with idealism.
4. An adherent of any system of philosophical idealism.

In my opinion being an idealist means you are worried about making the world a better place using the methods that you believe are correct... bad or good? who can say really.... in my opinion being a liberal idealist is a great thing (though I wouldn't consider myself an idealist, I am fairly liberal), but being a conservative idealist is a destructive and harmfull thing (though a conservative might say that this is a great thing)....

In the long run it's all relative... there's nothing wrong with being an idealist - but it's not the best way to see every side of an issue. I'm a fan of pragmatism myself....

It can be good unless your this way from lack of self esteem. Then your might start looing for ideas to solve problems not think about the consequences. Being an idealist does involve some structure of thought. I say this because I come from a liberal family and accomplished many thing in high school and college, but my esteem was lousy because I sucked at partying with friends. and my friends lived 12 miles away from me. So I had some belief in my I was a fake because I wasn't good at partying. Screwed my structure up.

Being an idealist is a good thing as long as you don't buy into your own thoughts 100%.

The difference: Trying for the ideal situation is better than believing there is no hope.

Your friend probably tries to come off as a realist. To me that says can't be done because can't never did.

You need to check the context of this one, especially in philosophy. There is the general everyday use of the term "idealist" which means someone who has high ideals that they live by - they aim high in terms of goals. The advantages are that these people tend to be irrepressible, fun to be around, and a positive antidote to cynical attitudes which are so corrosive. The downside is that this stance can come across as unrealistic and unworldly unless the ideals are translated into action as well. Very practical people would consider the term to be mildly pejorative. If you were told this in a philosophy class, it might be to do with ontology. Technically, an "idealist" is someone who considers that the universe is fundamentally mental - ideas - in terms of its substance. It is usually used in distinction to "materialist". Whereas the latter points out that ideas are the product of material brains, the idealist would stress that even matter, with all its properties, is an idea in the mind. Bishop Berkeley is a good example of this type of philosopher; Hegel is another, very different type.

is everything in this world good or bad? personally i like being an idealist. i think that most of the greatest leaders of all times would be considered idealists.. unfortunately some of the worse leaders of all times would also be considered idealists.. it's what you do with what you have that matters.

What do you think? Do you believe in your ideals?
Then let me tell you something you should not ever care what people call you as long as you believe you are right or just.
No matter what people will judge you .
Your friends have a real problem if they are labeling you for your beliefs and you should let them know that they are scared of change and that is not your problem.

If your idealism is the same as the blind idealism the the neo-cons display in all thier decision making... that is, thinking you are always correct when the facts show you are wrong, wasting American lives to justify your ignorance, and never questioning the results of your decisions...

then yes idealism is wrong (bad).

If you visualize a more just world, one of peace, then your idealism is right (good).

It depends what your ideals and values are.
