set your ip addresses manually on each computer 192.168.1.1 on one, and 192.168.1.2 on the other. mask should be 255.255.255.0 on both.

instead of the network set up wizard do this (it's a manual version)

start> control panel> Network connections> right click on the lan connection and select properties

New window will pop up called Local Area Connection Properties.

Select internet protocol (TCP/IP)
Properties.

select use the folowing IP address

Put in an ip address as such 10.12.1.2
subnet mask 255.255.0.0
gateway of 10.12.1.1

Use the same info for the other pc except increase the last number of the ip addres by 1 (or more, as long as it is NOT 1 or 2) example 10.12.1.25

Hit ok and restart.

That should get your system set up.

- set ip addresses manually
both addresses should start with 169.254
such as
169.254.10.10
and 169.254.10.11 for the other one

- make sure they have the same workgroup

- share some folders on both of them
