No, I am not being cheap by not going out to buy the cd. I have some great old cassette tapes (bootlegs and the like that you can't buy anywhere) that I want to burn onto cd's to save them. Anyone know how to do this? Can it even be done?

Yes, it is possible... and its very easy to do it too

Things that you need...
1. Cassettes ofcourse :P
2. A wire which has 3.5mm jack on both ends (see source). We'll call it LINE-IN cable.
3. A walkman or any music system that can give output in headshopes or ear phones.
4. A software for internal recording such as GOLD WAVE or SOUND FORGE.

Now, put the cassette in the walkman.
One end of Line-in cable will be connected to the output of the walkman (i.e. point where you connect headphones/ear phones).

The other end of line-in cable will go directly to your computer and into the LINE-IN socket (Blue)
(remember, behind your sound card, usually
GREEN = Speakers
RED = MIC
Blue = Line-in)

Once connected, run the software, click record and play the song on walkman. If internal settings of the computers (i.e. in volume control, etc) are okay, you should see the song recording.
Save it to mp3 and then you can burn onto CDs/DVDs...
___________
PS: one should do it only for cassettes which he wishes to backup OR home-made audios.
Piracy isn't good ;)

ALL THE BEST

You need an RCA "Y" cable, a cassette deck, and appropriate software. It's the same software that you use to import sound from records. The cable has the red and white RCA connectors at one end, which go into the cassette deck, and a small stereo sound (2 round lines) jack at the other end, which goes into the audio in jack on your computer.

You could try using a tape player that has AUX (Auxillary) Out or use the headphone socket and plug this into the Microphone socket in your soundcard. You will need a specific lead (Not hard to get). Then either use the Windows recorder. Find it in Control panel>Sound and audio device> Properties. There are also programs available (I.e Cool Edit) that will record from your Mic jack

I may be wrong, but as far as I know, there isn't a way to burn cassettes onto CD. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

You need a Roxio Version 8.0 .And RCA to Sound card audio Jack input to hook up your cassette player to your computer.
Play music from the cassete player and record through your sound card , store in MP3 or WMA on your harddisk using ROXIO media. then, you can burn in to CD.
