The NHS was set up in 1948 and is now the largest organisation in Europe. It is recognised as one of the best health services in the world by the World Health Organisation but there need to be improvements to cope with the demands of the 21st century. The NHS is changing the way it works to make sure patients always come first. This has brought about some fundamental changes in the way the NHS is structured and the way in which the different organisations within the NHS relate to each other.

The National Health Service (NHS) is the "public face" of the four publicly funded health care systems of the United Kingdom. The organisations provide the majority of healthcare in the UK, from general practitioners to Accident and Emergency Departments, long-term healthcare and dentistry. They were founded in 1948 and have become an integral part of British society, culture and everyday life: the NHS was once described by Nigel Lawson, former Chancellor of the Exchequer, as 'the national religion'. Private health care has continued parallel to the NHS, paid for largely by private insurance, but it is used only by a small percentage of the population, and generally as a top-up to NHS services.

The National Health Service that operates in the U.K. It was set up in the 1940's. Everybody who earns pays into this so that all whether in work or not is entitled to free health care.

That's the good bit.

However, even if there were enough dentists, we still have to pay for dental treatment. We have to pay for each item on a prescription (around £6.60 per item).

Lots of health care trusts around the country are in masses of debt and are being creative in ways of saving money eg. cutting off services which has huge negative effects on patients.

I can say though, if you have an emergency, then this service is excellent and you should not be kept waiting.

The thing that worries me is in the future we all might be asking what is the NHS!!

Its the national health service. Who are useless since we had labour in government.
The welsh Assembly are wanting to move emergency neurosurgery to Cardiff & downgrade our hospitals in swansea!!!! You would be dead by time you got to cardiff if you live in pembroke or swansea!!
It shouldnt be done. Also there was never mrsa when we had matrons in hospital back when maggie thatcher was in power. The nhs is no good,i have to go & have an op soon & am dreading it,not the op,the fact that i could come out with mrsa!!
Who will look after me,my 9yr old son??
my mum yes,but why should she have to be exposed to it if it happens!!
The govenment need to take a long hard look at the nhs & sort it out before its to late or is it already to late??

Its a huge sponge with an evil face on sucking up peoples tax paying money and squirting some into actually mending people and the rest goes into "nothing jobs" of over paid people who do studies in hospitals like " is there enough multicultural staff here?" and "we need someone to monitor the monitors" while getting rid of commonsense ideas from days gone by and paying extortante wages to fat cats who sit in offices dicatating the running of a hospital even tho they ve never trained as a doctor! OH and yes healing some people again and then scrapping cleanliness matrons so wards are of full of MRSA and other infections.
