The ASCII code (Alt+####) works but...
Sometimes you will want to put other things than a degree symbol - for example: 5th street, 5^2 (powers), He^2 ionic charges, etc. so you can do the following:

Type the character(s) and highlight.
Go to the "Format" button at the top and press "Font..."
Down where it says "effects" with all the check boxes, check the one marked "Superscript."

If you want to add a superscript button to your toolbar, click the small down arrow on the left of the Format toolbar (the one with "bold", "italics", "underline", and "Fonts/size").
near the bottom there shold be a button that says "superscript"
Press it and it should be added.

If it is not there, do the above except a the very bottom, press "customize..." instead.
Under the categories, click on Format.
Then scroll down the right side until you see the supescript button. Click and drag it to the toolbar and it will be there for future use.

Sorry if this is long; just trying to help! ;)
