Venice is probably expensive, but it's been a long time since I was there.
Inflation has hit Italy.

At your hotel, ask the Concierge where he would have dinner. Look for small family owned, off beat locations, where locals eat.
They will guide you in the right direction, believe me. Been there and done that. One sent me to a wonderful restaurant in Florence.

I know that many, not all, have an "English
menu" and an "Italian menu", different prices.
There are no "bad restaurants" in Italy.
Lose weight before you go, or take some larger clothes for return back home. LOL

You will be recognized as American unless you speak Italian.
Be wary of the Gondoliers. They may confuse you about the price before you board, then charge more, claiming that you did not understand.

Take the motor transports to get around.

Oh I've been to Venice...If your going you will have a blast, my absolute favorite place on Earth. As far as best restaurants in Venice, it's hard to pin point one. I had a great meal every place I ate. I know that if for instance during the day instead at sitting down in a restaurant you stop in to one of those sandwich type cafes and buy an amazing panini or piece of yummy pizza that is a great way to eat and not spend a ton of money. And the food is incredible, nothing beats the square slices of pizza in Italy. I also recommend asking a travel agent they always know so much about places to eat and stay abroad. Good Luck Ciao~

As others have said most restaurants in Venice are at the least very good. We were there in August and had a great time

As for cost - Venice is very expensive. The highest prices are around the tourists attractions. Stroll away from these places and find the places tucked away where the food is just as good but cheaper.

Seafood and pasta are the greatest. Pizza is everywhere.

Take your time and enjoy the place...

Venice is beautiful! Have fun, one of my favorite Italian cities by far. There are alot of restaurants in Venice, I'm not sure about non-expensive, but, I'm sure you will find something. The ones we went to were moderate, not that bad.
