Well if my boss is here about 50% of my work day is spent not working ( i can "pretend to be busy quite well ) and if he is not here than 95% of the day is done doing nothing...

Excluding morning break and lunch, probably less than 10% on a typical day, and most of that is spent moving tools or power cords or materials around. Rarely more than two bathroom breaks per day. No computers to goof off with.

We hard hats keep busy.

2 - 15 min. breaks and 1 - 1 hour lunch + bathroom breaks and taking some time to breathe so that my head doesn't explode once in a while.

I saw a specific statistic for how much time the average American wastes at work somewhere on this website... I think it was at least 20%.
It's a neat site to look around, anyway.

depends on who else is working with me that day. if i work with one supervisor, about 5% of my time is spent doing nothing and that's mostly going to the bathroom. if it's another woman, about 25% b/c she doesn't care if i sit around and do nothing.

I'm a CNA in a nursing home. I'm lucky to find 15 minutes to eat a sandwich.

I guess it all depends on how you define "working". In sales (my profession), I am only "working" when I'm face-to-face with someone who can buy what I'm selling. Preparation, proposal-creating, follow-up, driving-time...none of those are "work".

that's an excellent question.
i think it depends. somedays i'm really busy, but somedays there's really nothing much to do (i'm an accountant).
i would say around 20-50%
