"Smith set all to work; and led the way himself.... they must cease grumbling, he said; and try and help themselves, and not expect the Company to provide them with pillows and feather-beds.
What did John Smith mean when he said the colonists had to "cease grumbling"?

John Smith was saying that they had to work to eat. Most of them had never had to farm or hunt for their food. They were all very used to just getting it at a market. They had other trades and were from city areas. They would do more complaining than work and say it was unfair that they should have to do anything (they saw it as lowering themselves). Everyone wanted it the easy way like they were used to. They never thought it would be so wild. It was, in their minds, going to be another London.
John Smith made the rule if you don't work you don't eat.

John Smith the brewer?

Cease grumbling means stop moaning. Get on with it, nobody said it was easy.
