A friend of mine from Minnesota told me she was not a yankee!! I'm from Louisiana, so anything farther north than Little Rock is yankee land to me. Who do yall consider to be yankees, and who are southerners. And is there a cool (nice) term for southerners. Northerners get to be yankees, so what are we?

Who you call a yankee depends on where you live. Outside of the US a yankee is an American. Down south (that would be the south-eastern part of the US) they think anyone from north of the Mason-Dixon line is a yankee. If you are north of the Mason-Dixon line, then people from New England (and perhaps New York and New Jersey, too) are yankees. In New England, it could mean anyone from New England or more specifically someone from Connecticut. However, nowadays folks in Massachusetts and other areas that are heavily populated with Red Sox fans don't like to be called yankees at all!

A Yankee is from New England, which includes, of course, New York State. Some include New Jersey, as well.

Most Southerners do not know this, and they think everything north of the Mason-Dixon line is all the same culture. It's not.

As to a collective name for Southerners, I haven't heard of any that weren't meant to be rude, so I guess you are stuck with "Southerner"...which is not so bad!

A Yankee to me is not a nice term. I think it's like calling people from the south rednecks or Billy Bob's. I thought they used the term Yankee to seperate us because of the confederate war. I dont know though

As a true New Englander, please don't consider New York State part of New England. There are six New England states, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. With that said, the fine folks from New York state may consider themselves Yankees every bit as much as a New Englander.
