The cold water comes from a tank in the loft, to the bath and basin upstairs. hot water from cylinder in airing cupboard is ok and running.

Without seeing the set-up, not a clue. But it sounds as if you've done something basic but daft.
Get a professional plumber to sort it.
(I'm not one, by the way)

You will have to mconnect the hot and cold taps with some sort of hosepipe. You then open the hot tapfullyand slowly open the cold tap to allow the cold water to run through the hot water pipes. this shpuld run for about half a minute. Then turn off the cold waterand pull the hose off the hot tap and it should have cleared the air lock. Another cause could be no water in the big tank in the attic. maybe a stuck ball valve.

Just make sure you don't have a leak and are actually losing some water. I have never drained a line to get air out. I assume you are on public water system and not a well

if the cold water is not from a tank, meaning direct from outside supply, you should be able to clear air lock by turning your cold taps on & letting them run untill air comes out (taps will cough & splutter when air comes out), just keep flushing loo till same happens there

Greybeard has it in one.
Use your garden hose connected to the mains, hold it with a rag around the bath tap and give it a blast. should get things flowing again.YOU WILL NEED ASSISTANCE
If no hose ,remove rose from shower hold your finger over the end and turn on to mid-position, sometimes works.

You have to drain it. Its like a human having trapped wind...better out than in...or radiators you have to bleed them to get out the air to enable the heating to return to normal....sorry dude!
