You don't have to affiliate with a party. Register as non-partison. I have found this to be the best way. Vote based on the issues only. If more people did this maybe the parties would stick to the issues instead of fighting so much.

From my observations Republicans seem to be:

More for small governent and more control at the state level (this is not true for the bush administration though)

More for lower taxes

Big on corporate tax breaks

Less for environment
Less for social programs
Less for pushing minority rights

More for miltary build up

The religious right is in this group


The democrats seem to be more for:

Domestic programs at the federal level (these sometimes cost big and include helping the poor, health care, education)

Environmental issues

Minority rights

The left wing are in this group and the green party

I don't believe that there is any true non-partisan information on the net. People say they are non-partisan, but their true inclinations tend to come through.

If you believe that able-bodied people should have to earn what they get in life, and that the government should make as few rules as possible that affect your life, vote Republican.

If you believe that government has the best answer to every problem and don't mind being taxed and regulated to achieve that outcome, vote Democrat.
