Is a family member really helping you when they put you down, say hurtful comments, and make fun of you?

There excuse is a poor one to say that they love you when they belittle you is far from the truth. Family members like this should be stood up to otherwise they will just keep on with the hurtful comments. What needs to be done is letting them know it bothers you and simply state that it would be appreciated if they keep there comments to themselves. This should set them straight but if it does not I would avoid interaction with them altogether. If it is father or mother let the other parent who respects you know that it is affecting you emotionaly and that you just can not tolerate it. Don't be afraid to speak up to family things like this need to be discussed. It is mental and verbal abuse.

Put downs and making fun never help anyone. Many times it has the opposite effect while breaking down someones self-esteem. A comment you may view as hurtful might not seem so to them. It really depends on the personality of the person saying these things to you.

I myself am rather tactless with people but those who know me, know this about me. They realize its not said to hurt but rather to speak my mind. They can take it with a grain of salt or not.

You do the same. Remember, people who feel they need to hurt another emotionally probably dont have it all together themselves. Usually, its a "put someone else down to bring myself up" thing.

I think you can show love in a much better way than making fun of someone and telling them it's to toughen them up. My husband was brought up like that and he does it to my son and I don't care for it at all. Of course, other people in your life like coworkers or classmates might do that to you but you don't need your family to teach you that. Your family should always be loving and supportive not hurtful to you.

Argh... yet yet another occasion of an over-achieving mom that likes to impose her very own morality on each physique else! it is ridiculous. Um as how my mom puts it and i do not see myself as that she said 'i'm a very feisty *****' she at times don't want to say anything insultive to me coz she know i'll reply back so we both try especially she not to say anything insultive and she admits part of it is because she couldn't control me when i was a kid.

No. I cried one time, and my mom told me to shut up and humuliated me further. I know she loves me, but she makes me dislike her when she does that.
