Actually, the beaches in Key West stink. Smathers beach is mostly man made, and has no shells really. Your best bet is to snorkel while you are there, or take a day trip up to Sanibel Island, the shelling capital!

michael is right, no good shells. the keys are lovely but not the best beaches. try the west coast of florida
