It's very common! I am a CPS tech in the state if WI, and we see it alot. As babies get bigger, they don't like the cozy feeling of the infant car seats/carriers. The larger convertible car seat will be perfect I bet as long as you keep him rear facing for a least a year. For instructions on installing and best fit for baby you can check with your local PD or FD and see if there are any car seat checks coming up.

First off, you should be able to slide 2 fingers underneath the straps for it to be tight enough. If you have more room than that, then the straps are too loose.
Depending on your childs size, you may need to buy a new car seat. Most infant seats are only good up until 22 pounds, and then you need a new seat. My son outgrew his seat at 7 months, and we found that a forward/rear facing seat is much more comfortable, as well as being able to hold up to 40 pounds.

I was in the same predicament, but my child was 3months when I had to change it!!
I had him in the newborn carseat (which is probably what you had). His feet were over the edge and he would try to wriggle out and cry cause he would get hot (cause he was so cramped in there). He is a pretty huge boy. The neighbors six month old child is the same size as him, height and weight. So, I finally went and got another carseat that was deeper, so that his legs could stretch out further without hanging off the side (which really just means pushing up against the seat since it was rear-facing) and so that the straps were a little looser and it was spacier so he doesnt sweat in it anymore.
I think the bigger carseat will definitely fix your problem.
However, at six months, he could also be bored. Try one of those bars that you put across the carseat in front of them as if they were in a baby swing or something so that he can reach out and play with them or just stare at them like my son does, lol.

Some babies are uncomfortable with car travel. My daughter and my sister's son both had terrible motion sickness as babies. It made them very uncomfortable to ride in the car and even to cry when they saw the car seat.
Hopefully, it's just a fit problem, in which case the new, larger seat will fix it. But if it's motion sickness, it won't resolve until he's old enough to begin riding facing forward. Thankfully, facing forward usually solves the problem.

He may not be the car seat. He might just dislike being straped in and having to sit still. My son did the same thing. I didn't like having to take him anywhere. Try putting a portable DVD player in the car to keep his attention. You'd be amazed in how much of a difference this can make. If you prefer him not to see movies or whatch tv you can buy the little einstien movies, they are educational and will still keep his attention. Also, the straps in the car seat should fit snuggly but not so tight it is digging into him or cutting off circulation.

Never had too many problems with the car seat. For awhile when she was about 2 1/2 she didn't like sitting in it but that wasn't something that was up for discussion.

Try the convertable seat rear-facing. Try giving him some toys in the car. Try putting a non-breakable mirror on the back of the seat in front of him so he can see himself and maybe see you. Try singing to him or playing music in the car.

When my daughter was 5 mths old she started crying in her infant carseat. I bought her an evenflo stage 2 carseat and she's been fine with it ever since. Turns out the infant carseats are padded like the stage 2 carseat is. She's much more comfortable in it.
