I asked for help on defraging my computer. I tried the two suggested methods and neither worked. My computer is about 6 yrs. old. When I click on properties, under Tools, it has Error checking status, Backup Status, and Defrag which states my last defrag was 15 days ago. I tried the error and restarted and defrag and after an hour, it only defraged 4 % and just keeps starting over.

Hello again! So it's still hanging up on ya huh? You may have a bad sector that can't be fixed but unlikely. If you did a completed defrag 15 days ago, then why are you doing another one? Unless you've downloaded several programs, there's just no need to do it so often. The only other thing I can think of at the moment is to try in 'SAFE' mode as suggested. Another idea I'm having is to go to System Restore and Create A Restore Point. Then go back to System Restore and disable it. Then try defragging again. The only other 'quickie' option at this point would be to go to www.downloads.com and use one of the Defrag programs there to see if you get better results.... good luck :-)

Take the computer offline, reboot it, do not go online, go to disk cleanup and dump your temp internet files and cookies, turn off all screen savers, etc., disable any antivirus programs, etc. that auto-run on startup, then try defragging it again. If that doesn't work, run a complete virus scan or your hard drive...something's writing periodically to your hard drive that's interrupting the defrag, thus it keeps starting over. Some viruses do this. After you do the scan, try the defrag again in safe mode (press F8 as the computer boots). If successful, reboot in normal mode.

*Worst case scenario, if all else fails*...back up your important stuff onto some removable media..CDs, jump drives, flash drives, external hard drive, etc. and then reformat the hard drive using the "crash disk" that came with the computer, and then reinstall your software. I'd suggest investing in a good combo program like Norton System Works...it has antivirus, defrag, and cleanup programs built into it and has saved me a lot of problems.

Good Luck. Hope this helped.

Run defrag, in safe mode. It will finish faster, and won't get tied up with all the other programs running..
Turn off your computer, and when you reboot it, keep pressing the F-8 key while it is starting, that will get you into safe mode..good luck..

Have you done a disc cleanup? I had the same problem and did a thorough cleanup first, then defrag worked.

Make sure that your messenger, your Norton or MacAfee antivirus programs have been disabled, and that your screen saver is disabled.
