I am pretty sure you can buy a tortoise as a pet I think what you cannot do is import new ones into England but if you can get a second hand one it is OK as the other person says try a animal rescue centre hope that is of some use sorry I can,t really help very much

Some chain pet stores sell tortoises and you can usually find them in privately owned pet stores or from breeders. Tortoises can get large and require a lot of space. They also can live a very long time when cared for properly. Each species is very different so make sure you read up on which ever species you decide to get.

Yes, you can buy exotic tortoises from some of the bigger pet store chains. They're expensive.
You should consider getting a box turtle instead. All of the fun of a tortoise, less expensive, and don't grow as big.

Not like you used to be able to when i was a child in the 60's and you could go into pet shops and they had loads of them (as described in the book Esio Trot by Roald Dahl), but you can obviously still get certain, maybe special, varieties of tortoise because i saw one for sale in a garden centre pet shop not so very long ago. It was a fairly small variety and was £250.

no it is illegal now to import the humble tortoise into Britain for the pet trade. i tried to buy one yesterday from three different pet shops in Glasgow and each one told me the same story it is now illegal.

Yes they do..But please do lots of research b4 you choose one. My husband is a reptile vet and it is quite sad to see all those tortoises dying due to misinformed owners..There were a few here talking about giving animal fat protien to Russian Tortoises..THis is a big no-no..Its best to ask a vet about a certain tortoise species...(care)

definately. red footed tortoises and russian tortoises are the most common. they tend to be very expensive though, 75 dollars and up!
