Does anyone know what may be causing this?

could be any number of reasons, not all of which would be because of the coil. Her doctor will have to figure out the problem.

I have the mirena coil had have been experiencing frequent periods. the explanation the doc gave me is that the same amount of hormone is released from this coil for every women and generally if the women is very slim the hormone release will be to much and can give you these symptoms.......so if your friend has lost weight this could be why she has started to experience these symptoms.....

I don't know, but make her go to the doctor. I conceived on that coil, and then had a slow miscarriage, resulting in severe loss of blood. She could have an infection. Just get her to the doctors, SOON.

Don't know, but when i had a mirena fitted i just bled non stop, eventually my body rejected it and it fell out. It is probably hormonal, she needs to see her GP and be re-referred to her gynaecologist.

it could be the hormones coming from the IUD, she needs to see her gyn doctor and maybe have it pulled out

Her body is probably rejecting it. She needs to see a dr. to have it removed.
