Apparently Islam is growing rapidly in Latin America both by immigration and conversion. Has anybody had experience with this? How do the muslims relate to the surrounding culture; do they integrate or separate themselves? Do they follow local customs or customs from the middle east or elsewhere?

I live in Latin America (Brazil) and I don't think Islam is growing in Latin America. Almost all muslins in Latin America are arab immigrants or descendants of Arab immigrants. As the immigration of arabs to Latin America is stopping I don't think Islam is growing in Latin America. Conversions are very rare, I don't think conversions are stathiscally relevant, at least in my country. The muslins in Latin America keep much of their culture but I think they are more integrated than the muslins in United States. Latin Americans tends to be more tolerants towards other ethinicities. Jamil Mahuad (1998-2000), former president of Ecuador was muslin. A muslim president of the United States is unthinkable. I don't think Islam in Latin America is a big theat.
