Because music has moved on to the satellite and cable channels like The Hits & TMF, also sales of CD's have been surpassed by downloads off the net. TOTP was getting long in the tooth as far back as 2000 and the BBC seemed a bit slow to remodel the show owing to the change in tastes & format. I agree with some other answerers that the chart music these days is crap.

Because there are no proper pop stars or musicians.
All you get now is yeah, wow, Lets make love, a whole load of swearing chucked in as they have ran out of words.
Then the guitar players who only know 3 chords, all the restmake a whole lot of banging and whatever they call it , its a racket.

because audiences lost interest and with MTV and countless other music channels on satalite tv, they preferred watching music videos as opposed to artists singing or in most cases, miming to their own songs. although the longer top of the pops went on, the sooner it became stale and dull, plus the state of music in general has in most cases got worse, as years went by. and it still is worse by today's standards. do i miss it? well, not really. i loved it when i was a kid, but as i got older and the show got more and more dull and the quality of the acts not as good as it was years ago, i realised how far it has fallen down music fans expectations. especially mines.

because no one watched it. not really a place for TOTP when there are countless 24 hour music stations on cable. Plus most of the stuff that gets into the top 40 is runnish anyway.

People were so obsessed with downloading music and finding out about it online that it got pulled.
I think it was pretty good until chart music went belly-up in 2003

proberly because they cant sell it to ukgold
have you noticed how most primetime bbc1
programmes are 45 minutes long why not
make them an hour long?
because they are leaving the other 15 minutes
for adverts for when they sell to other networks
it makes you wonder why we pay for a tv licence
