I've always been a little unsettled by the depiction of Spongebob Squarepants' fanatical devotion to his krabby patty-flipping job. This little guy wishes he could go in to work in the middle of the night, doesn't want days off, sometimes, doesn't even want pay.

Today, Squidard went on strike for labor practices akin to the company house and company store, with Squidard and Spongebob owing money to the boss at the end of the week. The strikers were depicted as lazy, mindless sheep who didn't even know why they were striking and Spongebob wanted to get back to work under these unfair conditions so much that he was sticking himself to the glass, exposing his organs. Then, when someone crossed the picket line to apply for a job, Squidard says, "You didn't even threaten him."

This all culminates in spongebob, stupidly inspired by squidard's metaphors to destroy the Krusty Krab. This results in the boss owning them forever.

Barney wanted to teach kids to be polite and use their imaginations. Little Bear wanted to encourage kids to use their imaginations and play play play. Arthur wants to teach kids to be tolerant, courageous, and honest. What does Spongebob want to teach our kids?

Yes, my 9 year old thinks it's just a cartoon. I think tv is a pretty insidious and damaging medium, proof being America's near capitulation to George Bush's murderous lies.

Assertions of hypocrisy should be demonstrated. I'm afraid the correlation between thinking about politcs when spongebob is on and being a hypocrite eludes me.

To further complicate it, my sons and I were playing Risk 2210 when my youngest turned on Spongebob and we started a lively conversation on the topic which culminated in placing the question on the web.

Oh how I wish i could make a big issue of anything on the web - hardly anyone will notice what we do or say here today, doncha think?

Well, i had to wonder if it was adult programming myself. It is on early during the day, here, tho.

I love lots of Disney movies, tho not Path to 9/11.

Disney movies most assuredly teach. They are dripping with values. Mostly good wonderful values. But they are there.

Almost everything on tv is teaching you something and if you're not hip to that you just might be being sucked in.

Danny - what's cooler that gay folk?

My 9 year old son wanted to know, in relation to the previous answer, what on earth was wrong with gay people?

As to them actually raising a clam together, it certainly suggests that, if spongebob is corporate propaganda, it's not right-wing homophobic propaganda. That's good.

I just watched that same episode with my 4 year old grandson. To him, it was just another spongebob cartoon. There are spongebob episodes that try to teach you not to use bad language- even if others do, and to take care of a pet, and to be a good friend, not to steal. These are all things that children (and anyone else watching) will all understand.

I have two ways of thinking about this question...and it is a valid one.

There is a possibility that the writers of the cartoon are trying to get a message across to the public about labor unions, work-a-holics and the company mentality of many corporations in America (the world for that matter). I don't think it's directed to the children though, I know a lot of adults that watch Spongebob and so do the producers of the show.

The other possibility is they are trying to create a true to life cartoon but nothing underhanded is going on, it's just a way to entertain on more than one level.

Oh, and a little off subject...please report this person that keeps answering questions "A little off subject" they are using Yahoo Answers as a vehicle to advertise for their own gain.

Okay 1. Get a Life. @. Spongebob is not there to teach anyone anything, it's for entertainment purposes only. Barney is an educational show, it was made for that purpose only, spongebob was made to make us laugh! What so the powerpuff girls teach us, what does dragonball z teach us, what does ANY of the disney shows teach us (besides the newest disney products) 3. Spongebob is not gay, he's cool. I'm a big fan....SPONGEBOB RULES!

You make an interesting point, but if it was just this one episode I wouldn't call it propaganda. They may just have been telling a story. The schtick of the show is that Spongebob is kind of a loser, so I they're making fun of him loving his job so much, more than anything. TV writers are unionized - and known to strike - so I don't see them being anti-labor.

You watch kids cartoons and think about politics whilst you're watching, then you decide to make a big issue about it on the worldwide web about the programme being anti-labour. This makes you either a hypocrit, a self-destructive politician or an anti-labour demonstrator. LOL.
