Will you be directing the original version? You know the one where the older woman gets a young girl drunk then rapes her? I hope not, seeing as it's described as being 'a good rape'.

I liked the Vag Mons, but because of what it represents in this 2nd/3rd wave feminism thing. I liked how the voices of young girls, mothers, grandmothers and sex workers could all be linked through the common experience of being vaginaed people.

However, I think Eve Ensler is a bad playwright. She is a wonderful activist, and even last week I re-stumbled across her work in the former Yugoslavia, and it seems that she got all the way to Pakistan to interview women who had escaped the war, though never unscathed.

But back to her writing. I find most of it trite.

And I guess if you are acting for advice as a director, I would say that you need to get the actor who does the monologue which ends in cumt to chant it out until the audience joins in. I think this is common practice, but I went to a showing of it once where the actor said "cumt, everyone say it with me, CUMT" (and, well, very few people said it with her) and as that was her last line she left the stage without having gotten the energy flowing from the audience to the stage. It was kind of sad.

Anyway, congratulation on the fundraiser, and I hope that it goes even better this year.

"The Vagina Monologues" has also been the centerpiece of hundreds of non-commercial worldwide productions presented by V-Day, a movement to stop violence against women and girls. For several years the V-Day College and Worldwide Campaigns have been inviting schools and community groups around the world to present benefit productions of "The Vagina Monologues" on their campuses and in their communities on or around V-Day (Valentine's Day). To date, more than 1,000 of these productions have taken place. ALL V-Day events use "The Vagina Monologues" as a tool to raise money and awareness to stop sexual violence. Proceeds from the events go to local, national and international organizations already working to stop violence against women and girls. Do you think this is an effective use of the play? Where in the world do you believe such a production would be welcomed? Needed? Criticized?

No, and I wouldn't see it. I'm not a big fan of the flavor of it. I've seen some things about it and don't necessarily believe it represents women as much as it pretends to. When my daughter was in high school this was a "thing", and she didn't like some of its approach either.

I would think it would be entirely possible for you to raise money for the very excellent cause of the rape crisis center with a production of something else.

Wow, the people who have answered are being a bit judgemental especially the one who hasn't even SEEN THE FREAKING SHOW.

It's quite good if, of course, you have good actresses doing it. The monologues range from very funny to very serious and even uncomfortable to listen to. But it's a show anyone can learn from, especially men. Break a leg.

It's a great play, but I think it depends on how you approach it. It's intended to bring together women's experience and get them talking about their bodies which they are usually discouraged from doing (what's disgusting about the word vagina? Please). I think it works best for a younger crowd.
Good luck!

No. Don't want to see it either. Even the title sounds disgusting. However, I am glad about the money being raised for good causes. ;)

I have seen it. I wasn't impressed. Honestly, her voice grated on my nerves.

But on a brighter side, I think that it is GREAT that you are raising money for such a worth cause!
Keep up the good work!!
