Like everyone else, I highly recommend anything by Stephen King. He actually has a new book coming out tomorrow: "Lisey's Story." From what I have heard, this is an extremely good book, and I have one coming in the mail to me. I would definitely start out by reading that one, and then proceed accordingly.

Pet Semetary by Stephen King, Night Shift by Shephen King, The Collector by John Fowles, the Relic by Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston, and Sole Survivor by Dean Koontz. There's another one with Dean Koontz with little scary creatures in it, but I can't think of what it's called.

Edit: If you choose to read It or the Stand be forwarned that the middle of the book is really slow and I know a lot of people who never get through that section. They're good books though.

Someone already mentioned 'The Exorcist" -- and of course, Stephen King. Anything by Stephen King is bound to keep you interested -- and scared to death. He's got several collections of great short stories (such as Everything's Eventual), if you're not up for a long read.
