You put your cursor on the beginning of the paragraph. When you get the "capital I" at the end of the cursor, you left click and hold and drag.

Put the cursor infront of paragraph and hold shift and arrow at the same time in direction of what you want to highlight.

OR

Put cursor infront of paragraph, using the mouse hold down the right click button of your mouse and drag across paragraph.

What program or application are you talking about?

In Word, just drag your cursor across the text you wish to highlight to select it, then click on the Highlight icon (or choose from the Format menu, "Borders and Shading" and choose the color with which you want to highlight it.)

mouse click ( left ) to left of first sentence then drag down to end of last sentence - release ( most word processing programs )
