The smell?

I was a manager of a shoe shop for 2 1/2 years, my staff turn over was very low compared to other shops. All my staff were treated with respect and expected to work bloody hard.

When it was busy we all pulled together and felt good if we had done well. Prehaps it was just me ensuring everyone felt part of the team and making sure they enjoyed work.

I would say it is busy because in order to make the money lots of shoes need to be sold and usually not that many staff, but busy is not always "hard-work"

Look at your work enviroment and manager!

Is it to do with Kids? My 2 1/2 year old always screams and plays up in the shoe shop. he never wants the new shoes on, then we finally get the damn things on and he wont take them off again. And he seems to grow out of them in a few weeks and I have to do it all again. Also feet are gross, I would hate to work in a shoe shop. (and ive had some really crap jobs!)

I think any job dealing in customer service is difficult to work in. While not everyone is the customer from hell, a good majority are. Alot of people don't have any respect for people who work in service industry jobs. All they see is what is standing in front of them. What they don't understand is the person waiting on them could be putting his or herself through school, or has chosen to work two jobs to support themselves and/or their family, rather than engage in criminal activity to get money.

I'm always very polite when I deal with people working customer service jobs, especially at stores where you know the employees are probably being paid minimum wage. Minimum wage plus customer service is NOT a great combination.
