Very similar to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. In that example, each of the three movies will make some degree of logical and plotline without any exposure to the other two, but unless you watch them in order you won't get a real sense of the sweeping, overall saga.

Same is true of the GF movies. You'll get a much deeper sense of what is going on if you have the entire backstory - this is especially true with the third movie.

Best to you. Go rent 1 & 2.

I think you'll understand the characters and motivations better. Plus part 3 is generally considered to be the weakest of the 3. If you can get ahold of the other 2 I would recommend watching them in order.

Put on a big pot of sauce, open a jug of cheap red wine, light some candles, and start @ 1.

If you just get to see 1 & 2, your life will be complete. #3 was so disappointing, it was sinful to call it "Godfather".

"I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse." I'm jealous of ya, I wish I was watching them again 4 the first time! Have fun :)

I would watch the first two first....3 took place many years after the 2nd one so there are references to characters in the others that you won't get unless you watch them first.

It will help to understand the story if you watch the other two parts firstand it will make more sense. Plus they are really great movies.

No it's not necessary...but it's a good idea to follow the sequence. Then you'll understand what's going on.

Not really - but you'll enjoy it a lot more if you've seen I and II. You'll understand the history of the characters, and their motivations and actions will be more entertaining!

To get the full picture, yes. But each movie can stand on its own!
