I ran a 12V 1700mA battery recharger off a 12V 500mA voltage adaptor, and the adaptor died. Why? And how close do the mA ratings need to be for this not to happen?

It over-heated. Your Amperage draw exceeded the output of the adapter and mostly shorted/opened the transformer coil. I would say it shorted as the heat melted the thin layer of insulator off the wire in the coil. Now that it fried, bust it open and look how it made. If, this would have been the other way around it would have worked. Charger; 500 mA Adapter 1700 mA this way the adapter output could have handled the charger draw.

Your 500mA died because it needed to be the same or higher.rated than the other. It is always better to use higher so as the coils in the other do not overheat and short out.

It overheated. You did the equivilent of shorting it out. The adaptor has to be rated higher than the load.

Transformer coils can open, short out, or a combinations of both.

you pushed 1700mA through 500mA rated connection????? You fried a resistor...garanteed.
