usually when you have your triple screening done. if the Dr's find an abnormality in that test they will want to do a special ultra sound in order to check the lengths of the larger bones along with the base of the neck (DS kids have a thicker neck) and also to check for any heart or gastro-intestinal defects. now don't freak out! alot of times that test is crap and not accurate!! talk to you ob/gyn. this usually takes place around 5 months of pregnancy. if they find something during the ultra sound they may ask you to do an amnio. that is really the only sure fire way to test for down syndrome. the reason I know this is because I went through it all 3 yrs ago........today I have a beautiful blonde haired blue-eyed little boy who just happens to have down syndrome and he is the joy of my life! I wouldn't change a thing about him!!!!

CVS is typically done at 12 to 13 weeks.

Amniocentesis is usually done at 15 to 16 weeks.

Much beyond that, I would wonder, what is the point of testing for Down's?

If you aren't going to abort a Down's Syndrome baby, and you cannot have an abortion past the second trimester, WHY do the test? Chances are you will have a healthy baby, but these tests are very invasive and have a one in 200 chance of miscarriage (for amnio) and a one in 100 chance for CVS.

So if it is too late for an abortion, why would you risk the baby's life? You will find out soon enough. And by the way, chances are your baby will be healthy.

You can have the blood test screening up to 20 weeks and the US screening 18-21 weeks. Genetic amniocentesis is usually done at 16 weeks.

With my daughter (she is 13 months old now) my doctor ordered a test called a "quad marker" (it's called that because it tests for the markers of four things) and it was a simple blood test done between 15-18 weeks, NO later than 18 weeks. I know that there are more invasive tests that can be done if they think there is a problem at later times. Check with your doctor.....

The AFP screening is usually done between the 16th and 18th week of pregnancy (when the hormone levels are most consistent) it can be done anywhere from the 15th week until the 20th week of pregnancy.
