That is called an equalizer. It allows you to adjust the tone for all frequencies rather than just base and treble. The far left is what you normally think of as base and the far right is treble. You normally set them so it looks like a curve. The pattern is based on the type of music. WMP has some presets built it or you can set it manually.

they normally run from left to right starting with bass and finishing with treble i set mine into a smile and it seems to sound pretty good

left to right.... bass/mid-bass/mid/midtreble/treble
adjust them in a smooth flow from left high down then back up abit to treble........
