Hi, the interior walls of my house are concrete block(no plaster or drywall) what is the easiest way to put up a shelf. I have tried drilling holes( very difficult) Is there a certain drill for this to make it easier? Plus, I can't get the screws to stay in as they don't want to screw into the concrete. Help!
thanks

What kind of drill you need depends on the kind of concrete block you fixing to.If in doubt and the concrete resists normal drilling. get an SDS type drill, it will pretty much drill through any kind of masonary very quickly. See here for an explanation. http://www.diyfaq.org.uk/powertools/sds.htm and here for a picture of the drillbit http://images.usoutdoorstore.com/usoutdoorstore/products/full/fix_sds_drillbit_2.jpg

Then just use normal wall plugs and srews (see pic: http://www.tool-catalogue.co.uk/images/69041_HW11.jpg) to fix the hangers to the wall.

Hammer drill with a masonry bit,

Check out HarborFreight for an inexpensive 1/2" hammer drill, buy the masonry bit from your local Ace you could use tapcon screws to attached the brackets.. 3/16" bit.

You know.. they build entire houses from cinder blocks, and put entire floor-beams into the sides of concrete block-walls. Why not a simple shelf -- using the right drill bit & anchor/screws? (Go to your local hardware store, and just ask them.)

Get a masonry drill (1/4") and some shields to hammer in; the screws will then work.

If the blocks are hollow, then you can use what is called Angel wings, or spreader wings..You need a cement drill for this..any hardware store has inserts for cement, just ask at the hardware and they can tell you everything you need to know and supply you with everything you need hope this helped...

I usually use 1.5 inch screws... but if you are going to put lots of heavy things like books on the shelves you'd better use 2" ones....

Go to the hardware store and look at different masonry nails. Usually they have a twist in them, a little like a piece of licorice.
I have the same problem, sucks huh?
