I am guessing that in 1893 a schooner would make about 7 knots. --> http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=schooner+speed+knots racing schooners made 12, but I assume you don't mean a schooner rigged for racing.

7 knots = 8.0 miles / hour

Distance from Port-au-Prince to Rio de Janeiro
Distance is 5563 kilometers or 3456 miles or 3004 nautical miles
--> http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/distanceresult.html?p1=709&p2=213

3 456 / 8 = 432 hours or (3 456 / 8) / 24 = 18 days

DanE did a good job on estimating average speed and finding the distance calaculator......I would add that, on the trip from Rio to the Caribbean, there are two sets of doldrums to go through; the areas about 100 miles north and south of the Equator that have light and fluky and unpredictable winds.....it could easily take an additional week just to do that 200 miles, so add that the Dan's estimate and you've got a good working number
