my mother is trying to find away to soften up raw hide .. or what can you use to soften it up

In very old times, they chewed it...but I can't imagine you mom wants to that!

In the old days the brain from the animal was used it had tannis in the brain and when smeared over the rawhide this would soften it, so no brain well then use other tannis type materials tea has lots of tannis in it this also takes off the grubby black finger marks on hardwood, the tannis leaves the wood supple not dry.

Let it sit in water for awhile. Colored rawhide stains.

That's kinda gross and probably not the best idea for those purposes. Any dog that comes in your house (if that will happen) will try to eat your chair, ya know?!!! And it might smell.

mix two thirds hot water and one third vinegar in a tub or pot and let it soak until it's soft also change water to where it is always hot
